Antarctica: When Silence Becomes Loud
The whitest silence on earth
There are moments at sea that defy all description. The first sight of a pack-ice field stretching to the horizon is one of them. No wind, no engine noise – just the soft crunch of the bow in the ice.
For twelve nights we explored Antarctica aboard MS Fridtjof Nansen, accompanied by an expedition team that knows every bay like the back of its hand.
- Zodiac excursions between icebergs
- Penguin colonies within sight of the ship
- Scientific lectures on board
You do not return as the same person who set out.

A day in the ice
The daily rhythm on board follows the light and the ice, not the clock. A Zodiac excursion to a penguin colony in the morning, a lecture on sea-ice dynamics at midday, silence on the aft deck in the evening – while the sun barely dips below the horizon.
